UNDERFORMANT
RECENT MUSIC
BIO
Raised just outside Portland, Oregon, in Vancouver, Washington, Brian was immersed in music from a young age, starting with drums and vocals. His passion for music took him to Western Washington University in Bellingham, where he initially aimed to major in percussion with aspirations of becoming a session drummer. However, his academic journey led him towards music composition, shifting his focus from performance to a broader, more experimental engagement with music. This pivotal shift allowed Brian to discover and embrace the expansive possibilities of electronic music. Adopting the moniker Liezer, he began crafting his own tracks and albums.
Brian's pursuit of musical excellence continued at New York University, where he earned his master's degree in music composition in 2015, under the mentorship of esteemed composer Julia Wolfe. He eventually attended the Bang on a Can music festival as a composition fellow. During this time, Brian composed music for the short film Shoka by award-winning director Jun-ting Zhou, as well as for multiple indie video games.
Post-graduation, Brian released several albums under the name Liezer before transitioning to Underformant. His recent work delves into the timbral depths of the human voice through computer processing, as well as "hidden" rhythms that only technology can uncover.
